Rocks take maximum points in Top of the Table Clash
The league leaders made the trip to high-flying Great Bentley on Saturday and came away with a hard-fought three points, thanks to a second-half strike from Tom Barnacle.
The Rocks went into the game with an unusual line-up, as striker Ross Barnes pulled on the gloves to cover in goal with the regular No.1 unavailable. Any doubts were quickly put to rest as Barnes produced a commanding performance between the sticks, showing composure throughout.
The opening 45 minutes saw both sides battle for control in midfield. Great Bentley twice rattled the woodwork while the Rocks created half-chances of their own, Bobby Reeman and Harry Prince both going close before the break. Despite the pressure, East Thurrock’s defence stayed resolute, keeping the hosts at bay to reach half-time level.
The second half followed a similar pattern with the home side again striking the woodwork, but the Rocks took their chance when it came. On 70 minutes, Zac Bussell delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, Lewis Gardener rose highest to head down, and Tom Barnacle was on hand to volley home for what proved to be the winner.
Great Bentley threw men forward in the closing stages, but Ross Barnes and his back line stood firm. A late flurry of corners and crosses were dealt with superbly as the Rocks saw the game out to seal a memorable away victory.
It was a result built on grit, teamwork and resilience, epitomised by Barnes’ makeshift heroics in goal and the tireless running of every player in amber.
The win not only sealed another statement result but also keeps East Thurrock Community FC unbeaten at the top of the league, four points clear with a game in hand.
